VERY interesting article!
I have a B-and-W print of that moon mural on the wall of my attic since about ten years or so. It's a fold-out version from one of the ancient Sky-and-Telescope issues (probably of 1957 or 1958), and I take a look at that print almost every day.
Thanks Chesley Bonestell!

I am in favor of re-doing the moon's service from scratch. We will send a demolition team there after we set up a base sometime in the near future.

What Bonestell saw in his imagination is so much better then what we finally saw.

Display the mural anyway just because it is so beautiful. The heck with reality. It doesn't really matter after all.

Dear Sir:

I was glad to come upon your website. I have long been an
admirer of Chesley Bonestell. I can remember his space paintings in Collier's Magazine. I saw Destination Moon back in the 1950's & was thrilled by it. It had a big effect on me. I also liked the haunting Leith Stevens music selection "The Crater Harpalus" that accompanied the first panning of the landscape in the movie. Bonestell's art & Stevens' music anchored this scene in my mind vividly to this day. I dreamed of going to the moon. I was watching live when Armstrong set foot on the Moon, & I immediately made the connection with Destination Moon, including when the claiming of of the Moon for all mankind was made.

In high school I used to look at a copy of the Edmunds Scientific Catalog before class started. I remember seeing Edmunds offering a large format panoramic poster-mural, with dimensions of something like 40"x15" or so, of the Destination Moon Lansdcape, & I thought of ordering it, but I never did. I regret it now, because it is out of print. Much later, when in the Air Force, some of his Martian Landscapes appeared in a magazine. That reminded me of the Destination Moon Landscape. I wrote to him & asked him if it was available from him, as well as other of his Space art. He kindly wrote back in what was obviously a laboriously hand-typewritten letter by the "hunt & peck" method, saying that regrettably he had no art he could sell himself, but I would have to get any of it from the books they were printed in. Unfortunately through time I have lost this letter. It would be nice if you were able to offer a reprint of the Destination Moon Lanscape Poster some day.

Dear Smithsonian Air And Space Museum

I am glad to have found this web site, as my recent lunar art has been remarkably compared to that of Chesley Bonestell's. I tried to comment a few weeks ago but could not get the site to accept my comment.

I am an artist and a writer interested in the intersection of art, science, and global religious/ethical thought. Resources in this area are few. If anyone out there knows of a university department or critical thinker in this area, pls let me know. Your pictures of the lunar surface are inspiring. Thank you. Elta Wilson

I am an artist and love painting big and wide sometimes but reading this article expanded my viewpoint. First I never new the Air and Space Museum had that much art in it's collection. And This super wide Luner painting has made me rethink how wide one can paint. Anyway this is a great project and I am glad I found it. Good luck to the crew that is restoring it
