I worked in Antartica as a weather observer for the Navy and lived at McMurdo Station during the Antarctic summer of 1979-19080 (our winter, so spans the new year). My friends were the scientists researching the Antarctic that season and also the civilian weather researchers/observers from the nearby New Zealand base. I used to hike the mile or so to visit them!!
